The 7 Best Dog-Proof Litter Boxes
1. The Designer Catbox Litter Box – Best Overall
This clever product serves a multitude of purposes, including being dog-proof! Not only will this give your cat the peace of mind of having their own private area, but it also looks good.
However, its functionality is where it really shines. You may think that a dog could easily just hop in the hole to go in the box, but the manufacturer is one step ahead. It has added an interior insert that a cat can easily slink around, while the less graceful canine will be stumped upon entrance. This also doubles as a way to keep everything in the litter box.
As for cleaning, the top is held up by air-locked hinges. When you are cleaning this out, it won’t slam down on you. The top also helps keep the odor in. You can decide which side you want the entrance on, so when you have guests, they’ll have no idea that your litter box is out in the open.
This product does require assembly, and while it isn’t difficult, it also isn’t easy. We have heard of many ways that you can modify this product to make it work better or to make cleaning easier. The good news is that if you have a big dog, they don’t stand a chance, but nosey little dogs might be able to wiggle their way inside. Others have said that this might be too small for really big cats.
2. Petmate Litter Pan – Best Value
The design of this product is really quite smart. With the entrance on top, this gives your cat all the privacy in the world if they just want to escape for a while. Also, they can’t throw litter all across your floor!
The lid is easy to remove, so cleanup is simple. Whatever your preferred method is, you will be able to do it with this litter box. The top itself is grated, so when your cat jumps out and decides to join you on the couch, the top will catch any loose litter on their paws. On the sides, there are storage units where you can keep all your cleaning supplies.
Keepers of kittens and canines love this product. It is big enough for most cats and truly does a wonderful job of keeping dogs out. While it is not entirely dog-proof, it is very dog resistant. There’s always a chance that your dog could get their head stuck in the opening or knock this over.
After seeing how effective it is, it’s clear to us that this is the best dog-proof litter box for the money.
Petsfit has made a little box enclosure that we can only assume was inspired by the Batcave, because this is some secretive stuff! This is a two-story box, with the entrance on the second tier. Your dog will be dumbfounded when the cat enters and then disappears. This is, of course, because the cat retreated to the bottom level of the box, where the litter box presumably is. If our first two products on this list were quite dog-proof, then this item might be the most dog-proof. Of course, if your dog can figure out how to open the door, then it’s all over.
The good news is that they probably won’t be able to figure out how to open it. The door is locked by a latch, and while it keeps the dogs out, it easily lets you in, making cleaning a worry-free task. Because the litter box goes on the bottom floor of this unit, you won’t have to worry about litter being spilled everywhere.
It should be noted that this is a good-looking item as well. It would be hard to hide this as a litter box, but if you have guests, they would probably admire its aesthetics. Up to two cats can apparently fit in this at the same time, albeit if they’re smaller cats.
Those who have this as their incognito CatCave have been very pleased. Many people are surprised by the size of this item, so plan accordingly. The only real complaint we have with this item is that it is not easy to assemble, as the instructions can be quite confusing. Once you have it built, though, you’ll probably love it.
4. IRIS Top Entry Cat Litter Box
This item is similar to the item from Petmate, but it is better looking and costs a bit more. The opening is in the top to keep your nosey dog out. This is a wonderful deterrent for most dogs, though there are stubbornly curious canines out there. Either way, we think this is a good product.
The top entry serves two functions. One is that it ensures that litter doesn’t get sprayed everywhere, unless your cat somehow shoots it upward. The second perk is that it will probably keep your pup out of the litter box! Sure, your dog can try to climb in or even knock it over, but the odds of that are low. This is a great place to store treats for your kitty too, as your dog won’t be able to get to them.
Those who are worried about the contents of the plastic can rest assured that this item is BPA free. IRIS is concerned about the health of your animals and doesn’t want to introduce any unneeded chemicals into your home.
This is a great item for small to medium-sized cats. It will probably be bigger than you expect, but it’s easy to hide away in the corner. The removable lid also makes it simple to clean. The lid itself is grated, so any kitty litter on your cat’s paws will be knocked back into the litter box.
Those whose cats use this litter box have confirmed that dogs are still ever curious, but for the most part, the product does its job, though there are durability concerns.
Good Pet Stuff has made an item to trick both your dog and your guests. Your dog will want nothing to do with this because it looks just like a random everyday household plant, while your guests will also be none the wiser.
This is a well-constructed litter box made of polypropylene. It actually doubles as a plant pot too, though the plant is plastic. This litter box even has a filtered ventilation system so guests at your house won’t be wondering why your ficus smells like cat poop.
The other litter boxes on this list have mostly been for small to medium-sized cats, but this litter box comfortably holds larger cats or multiple cats at once.
The common consensus with this item seems to be that if you put a little work into it, it can turn out wonderfully. Some folks adapt it so they can put their own plants in it, as the plastic plant that it comes with is not the most popular. Others have switched out the litter bed for something more substantial. Still, others have painted it to match the rest of the house. Of course, one of the real concerns is if your dog catches on and realizes that it’s not a peony …
This also isn’t the easiest item to clean, and your cat will be able to kick litter out.
6. unipaws Designer Cat Litter Box
This litter house shares a similar aesthetic to our top pick, though there are a few differences. First, let’s talk about how great this piece would look in your home! You can even situate it in a way that makes it less obvious that it is a litter box.
Instead of opening from the top, this item has doors in the front. Inside are two compartments: one for the cat to enter through and then the main chamber for the litter box. The entrance area is used to dissuade any pondering pups who might be around. The difference between this and our top pick is that there isn’t a maze-like quality to this item. If your dog has the gumption to go in, they can do so easily.
This is an easy-to-clean and easy-to-use litter box. Also, because there are doors in front of the litter box, they will block any litter that your adorable kitty tries to kick out. You can also hide treats for your cat back here if you’d like!
People seem to be lukewarm on this product. Some really love it, while others have certain complaints. Some say that it is smaller than they imagined. Others praise how easy it is to put together but chide how cheap the materials feel. There have been reports of this product having a weird odor as well.
7. Nature’s Miracle Entry Litter Pan
This is another top-entry litter box, and while it looks more traditional than our value pick, we have to say that it is less effective than a trash can with a hole in the top. If your dog wants to poke their head into this litter box, they easily can, and the split construction offers more chances for litter to get outside of the box.
Cleanup is relatively easy with this product, and it is made of a material that is supposed to help mitigate the smell of the litter box. The lid is grated, allowing for litter to fall back in once your cat leaves. This is another box we would not recommend for large cats.
This product is bigger than you might expect it to be. If you are transitioning your cat from a traditional litter box to this one, be advised that the transition may not be so simple. It may take cats, especially older cats, a little while to get used to this system. There are also durability concerns.

When buying a litter box that is dog proof, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, nothing in the world is truly dog proof. Second, your final choice may simply come down to aesthetics.
Some of these litter boxes look great, almost as good as any household furniture. Such products are typically on the pricier side, however. The other problem with these is that while they disguise what they are on the outside, if your dog finally makes the discovery of what’s inside, the jig is up.
While it is a great dog deterrent, dogs can still knock top-entry litter boxes over and create a mess. Of course, it has its criminalizing qualities: You’ll know what your dog was up to when they walk into the room and have the litter box lid around their head.
We recommend that you look into getting a warranty for any item, but especially when dealing with items for animals. It might give you the peace of mind to know that if something were to happen, you aren’t out of that money.
There is little in life as heartwarming as the relationship between cats and dogs. As such, we hope that these reviews have helped you solve a household dilemma! We know it isn’t easy keeping the curiosity of your pup at bay, but with a little deception, you just might be able to do it. Also, you can keep your house looking awesome in the process, especially if you decide to go with something like our top pick from The Designer. We also advocate the top-entry system, as it is clean and effective. A great example of this is our value pick from Petmate.
Whatever you decide, we are glad to have been a resource!
