The 9 Best Dog Clippers for Thick Coats
1. Hansprou Dog Clipper for Thick Coats – Best Overall
This clipper has the two things that you should look for with this tool: It is strong and powerful, and it won’t get hair stuck in it or cause any pinching! That’s a win for you and your dog! Made from high-quality titanium alloy with a ceramic moving blade, the blades on these clippers are completely detachable, so they are easy to clean once you are done with even the furriest of pals. As proof of their strength, Hansprou uses rabbits as an example. Most rabbit hair is uncuttable with a dog hair trimmer, but this model is able to do it with ease. That is because it is made with a 35-tooth cutter. The more teeth, the sharper they are, and the thicker the coat they can cut!
You would think that using a product like this would be a rather loud and jarring experience, but these clippers never get any louder than 50 dB, to make sure that your pet feels comfortable the whole time they are getting groomed. Coming with four guard combs and five levels of shifting capability, this trimmer lets you clip your dog a little or shave them completely. The body of this product are sturdy — these are professional-grade clippers, after all. This 12V clipper comes with a two-year quality assurance package.
The only downside to this product is that sometimes the power button fails, but only on the “off” setting. So, you may just have to turn these clippers off by unplugging them from the wall.
2. OMORC Dog Clippers – Best Value
Coming with a 12V motor, these clippers can handle quite a bit of fur! The high rotating speed of the motor offers a wonderful shave without any clogging, so your pet can be groomed in peace. Speaking of which, this clipper comes with a full grooming kit! Once done shaving, you can style your pet any way you’d like.
The cutting apparatus itself is made of carbon steel, which some would argue is more durable than ceramic, and allows this clipper to powerfully move through a thick coat of fur without overheating. The R-shaped blade design ensures that there won’t be any nicks or cuts on your pet during the process.
When plugged in, this device will not lose power, offering a consistent cut that you might not get from wireless devices. This is not the quietest clipper on the market at 60dB, but it’s also not so loud that it will scare your pet. The kit comes with eight clipping guards, scissors, a comb, and a cleaning brush for a full grooming experience.
Cleaning this product is not that easy. There may be instances where hair gets caught in the clipper, pulling on your pup a bit. Even with that being the case, these are still the best value dog clippers for thick coats.
Made for thick fur, this product from Wahl is more about shaving and less styling your pet. These clippers come with two speeds to tackle the thickest coats. Even though they are heavy duty, both speeds are quiet to make sure that the shaving experience is as comfortable as possible for your pet. These clippers also have low levels of vibration, adding even more comfort to the process. This ease of use is comfortable for the pet owner as well! Ergonomically designed and only 12.9 ounces, you won’t tire out during the process of shaving your pet.
The blade itself is Wahl’s #7F ultimate competition series, which makes for a fast and smooth process. This corded clipper comes with an extra blade, blade oil, and a cleaning brush. Wahl states that this product is perfect for Pomeranians, Pekingese, Poodles, Labradoodles, Australian Shepherds, Golden Retrievers, and other thick-haired dogs. This product comes with a two-year warranty.
As our premium pick, this product holds up well, though there are a couple of flaws we should point out. One is that the blade is a bit hard to clean. The other is that guards are not compatible with these clippers, meaning that if you purchase this item, you better be a fan of closely shaved dogs.
4. Bousnic Dog Grooming Clippers
Take your dog trimming into the 21st century with these USB-charged clippers from Bousnic. With a sleek interface and classic clipper design, you can tell when your clippers are at full charge and ready to go. Bousnic’s two-speed trimmer is ideal for an anxious pet, as it hardly vibrates or makes any noise, which is quite impressive for a cordless trimmer! The ergonomic design will allow you to clip hard-to-reach areas with the stainless-steel and ceramic blades. Not only are the clippers great, but it is also a whole grooming package in one! This package comes with four different combs, blade oil, a USB charger, stainless-steel scissors, and a cleaning brush. It also has a lifetime warranty.
Unfortunately, this product doesn’t come with the actual charger part, just the cord. Also, if you take the blades off to clean or replace, they are hard to get back on. Durability is not the strong suit for this product, but considering the price and lifetime warranty, that may not matter to you.
Clippers for specific breeds:
5. Andis 22340 Blade Clipper
These clippers from Andis are made from shatterproof housing. This is another two-speed motor unit that offers pro-quality shaves for even the thickest hair. The blades are detachable, making for an easier cleaning experience. The cord is an expansive 14 feet in length, which is perfect for those with bigger dogs.
Sadly, this product overheats quite easily. On top of that, it tends to get hair caught and pulled. These are also not that durable. Fortunately, if you do have to contact customer service, their team has a wonderful reputation.
6. Highdas Dog Grooming Kit Clippers
Highdas has given us a product that looks adorable, but does it work to trim your dog? While other clippers on this list can attack thick coats right away, it is recommended with these clippers to use scissors first, effectively doubling your workload. They aren’t bad once you get past that, though.
The spacing of the blades is fully adjustable on the clippers themselves, and the kit comes with four different guards for a fully customizable fur experience. While these are meant to be wireless, you can use them while they are plugged in and charging. They’re also quite silent, coming in at 50dB, so even for easily startled pups, these shouldn’t be too bad. The look and design of these clippers might lead you to believe that it is a flimsy product, but many users report on their pleasant surprise at the hefty feel of these clippers. When you consider the price, it’s quite a good deal!
The blades are removable, but once removed, they are hard to get back on. Also, these clippers have a bit of a charging issue, though this is somewhat mitigated by the fact that you can use them when they are plugged in.
7. PetExpert Dog Grooming Clippers
These clippers from PetExpert are another bargain bin item with surprises, as well as downfalls. This package comes with a complete grooming kit that has everything you need to keep your pet looking their absolute cutest, including clippers, an AC adapter, scissors, comb and brush, four hair guards, nail clippers, and a nail file (a first on this list). The LCD display will smartly show you how much battery is left, and when it is time to charge, you will be able to do so with the 360-degree charging base. You can’t use this item while charging, as it is placed in a cradle as opposed to plugging into an outlet. The engine is tiny, but what it lacks in power, it also lacks in noise, which in this case, is a great thing.
This is not the most powerful set of clippers on the list, which is what brings it down to number seven. You will need to give your dog a haircut beforehand, and even then, these clippers still pull a little. Another issue is that these stop holding a charge after a while, which is problematic because there is no wall cord to use.

8. AIBORS Dog Clippers
The AIBORS clippers are pretty sturdy looking, touting toughness, but how do they hold up? Before we get to the cons, there are good things to note about these clippers. This is a corded device that will never require charging. It comes with a grooming kit with everything but nail clippers and a nail file. The 12V motor is supported by 35 teeth made out of titanium nanotechnology, which is purported to be 10 times sharper than steel. This product comes with a 12-month warranty, and the customer service agents promise to respond to your claims and queries within 24 hours.
Unfortunately, these clippers get stuck easily, and as strong as they are advertised, they don’t really do the trick.
9. Gimars Cordless Dog Clippers
These clippers are similar to our number-seven pick but cost about three times as much, dropping them to number nine. Gimars has made a product that is neither good nor bad. Made for medium thickness coats of hair, this product does well enough when it works.
That’s the problem, though: They hardly ever work properly or even at all! Considering the price, it’s quite a disappointment. Also, some users have reported this product showing up damaged or broken.
When you are grooming your dog, the first thing you should be concerned about is your pet’s safety. Once you know that you have a safe product and how to properly use it, then you can think about giving your dog a mohawk or a pompadour. That said, let’s look at a few of the things you should consider when purchasing clippers for your long- or thick-haired dog.
The whole job
Some companies advise cutting your dog’s hair first before using clippers. Most people would rather have a pair of clippers strong enough to do the whole job.
To be sure that you can really get the job done with the thickest of coats, you probably want corded clippers because they don’t lose power. While battery-powered clippers are great, they start losing steam the moment you turn them on. This is fine for some dogs, but for thick hair, we want full power to avoid pulling.
Grooming in full
Most of these clippers offer different grooming packages. Some are minimal, while others come with everything you need to make your pet feel like they spent a full day at the spa. How important is this to you?
Most dogs are notoriously skittish about loud noises, so it makes sense that you would want quieter clippers. The problem, unfortunately, is that the more powerful your clippers are, the more noise they create. We feel like any pair of clippers around the 50dB mark are safe.
Things break, especially things with small sensitive moving parts. We certainly recommend looking into the warranty for the pair of clippers you choose, as well as doing a bit of research about the customer service teams attached to the product.
We hope that you now have a more guided approach to shopping for your best friend. You can feel good knowing that you are taking proper care of a loved one.
So, what did you decide to buy? Is your dog’s hair so thick that it requires our premium offering from Wahl? Or did you decide to go with our overall top pick from Hansprou? Whatever you chose, we are thrilled to be a part of you and your dog’s life by helping with these reviews.
