The 10 Best Dog Blankets
1. PetAmi Waterproof Dog Blanket – Best Overall
While we love the PetAmi Waterproof Dog Blanket for a few different reasons, we particularly like it because it’s waterproof. When you have a dog, a waterproof blanket is a great addition, especially if they are very young or very old. Despite being waterproof, this blanket is still incredibly fluffy and comfortable (you may even consider keeping it for yourself!).
This blanket is durable enough to use both indoors and outdoors. It’s made with rough dogs in mind, so it’s built with 460 GSM premium microfiber polyester, ensuring it is both comfortable and strong. For these reasons, it is easily the best overall dog blanket available.
- Waterproof
- Fluffy
- Indoor and outdoor safe
- Very durable
- Expensive
2. Frisco Sherpa Dog Blanket – Best Budget
The Frisco Sherpa Dog Blanket is a basic dog blanket. It’s soft and cozy, keeping your pet warm and cozy while they nap. It’s also somewhat stylish with a modern, geometric style. It also comes in two different colors, which is a nice addition. Plus, the bed is also relatively inexpensive while still getting the job done. In fact, we consider it the best dog blanket for the money. It’s even machine-washable, which is extremely important when you have a dog.
That said, there aren’t many extra features. It isn’t waterproof, and it’s also a bit small for our tastes. However, if you’re just looking for a basic blanket, or for a really small doggie it is a solid option.
- Stylish design
- Inexpensive
- Machine-washable
- Soft and cozy
- Not waterproof
3. Best Friends by Sheri Throw Shag Dog Blanket – Premium Choice
The Best Friends by Sheri Throw Shag Dog Blanket is a bit more expensive than most options. However, it’s also larger and very shaggy. It isn’t waterproof, but it is water-resistant. Therefore, it should protect your furniture from most spills and accidents.
It’s also washer and dryer safe, ensuring that the blanket is safe if your pet has any accidents. If you have an older or younger puppy, this is especially important. These pets tend to have more accidents than others.
The luxurious shag is a nice additive, too. It’s pretty cozy, and most pets that like shaggier blankets will love it.
- Washer and dryer safe
- Luxurious shag
- Water-resistant
- Somewhat expensive
4. Allisandro Microplush Fleece Polyester Dog Blanket
For dogs that don’t necessarily like shaggy blankets, we highly recommend the Allisandro Microplush Fleece Polyester Dog Blanket. This blanket is sizable and comes in a few different colors. We will admit the pawprints probably won’t fit most home décor, but they may be cute if you have a dog-themed area, anyway.
This blanket is machine washable. You can throw it into the washing machine whenever it gets dirty, allowing you to use it for longer.
- Large
- Not shaggy
- Machine-washable
- Not as stylish as other options
5. PetAmi Sherpa Fleece Waterproof Waffle Dog Blanket
If you want to put practicality above style, we recommend considering the PetAmi Sherpa Fleece Waterproof Waffle Dog Blanket. It has a reinforced lining for waterproof and leakproof protection, and it is completely machine washable. You can also tumble dry it on low.
The textured waffle pattern is nice and is on both sides. It looks modern and makes it a bit nicer than some of the competition. It’s designed to be used to protect your furniture or as a liner for a dog crate or pet mat.
- Machine washable
- Waterproof and leakproof
- Textured waffle pattern
- Somewhat expensive
- Only larger sizes are available
6. PetFusion Premium Pet Blanket
The PetFusion PF-PB2A Premium Pet Blanket features two layers of a soft polyester micro plush fabric. It’s reversible and features a light grey on one side and a darker grey on the other. It comes in several sizes to accommodate most pets.
What we didn’t like about this blanket is that it is extremely thin, even with the two layers. It won’t provide much warmth. It’s not waterproof, and it’s also quite delicate. We tried three blankets, and our rambunctious dogs had tears and holes in each one in a few days.
- Soft polyester micro plush fabric.
- Reversible two-tone grey
- Several sizes
- Thin
- Not waterproof
- Not durable
7. ALLISANDRO Microplush Fleece Blanket
The ALLISANDRO LF1808-M Microplush Fleece Throw Blanket is made from 100% polyester and features a bone design pattern. It’s machine washable, and the material won’t shrink or fall apart in the wash.
The blanket is soft, but not as soft as many other brands on this list. It’s also thin, and there is no padding or stuffing to help keep your pet warm and comfortable. The color on ours was somewhat faded, and not as bright as we thought it should be.
- 100% polyester
- Machine washable
- Thin
- Not very soft
- Faded color
8. PETMAKER Waterproof Pet Blanket
The PETMAKER 80-PET6151 Waterproof Pet Blanket is reversible and washable in the washing machine. The fabric is soft and durable and features a chemical spray that creates a waterproof barrier that remains after several washes.
What we didn’t like about this brand is that its actually two pieces of fabric sewn together. The stitching is only around the edges, and there is no stitching in the center to hold them in place. This approach means that the blanket doesn’t keep its shape and always appears messy. The inside of the two fabrics is where the waterproofing is, which makes them extremely slippery.  This slippery fabric contributes to the messy appearance and causes the blanked to bunch and slide while the dog s using it.
- Waterproof
- Reversible
- Machine washable
- Doesn’t keep its square shape
- Slippery
9. Friends Forever Dog Blanket
The Friends Forever PET63-0020 Dog Blanket features a 100% polyester micro plush fabric that is very soft to the touch. The material is also shed-resistant, and won’t leave little hairs on your sofa and floor.
We found that it does a pretty good job of staying on the couch and doesn’t slide around as many of the other brands on this list, but it is not waterproof, and fluids can pass right through it. It’s also not very absorbent. The biggest problem we had with it, though, is that it tears very easily. We have several that all have holes in them.
- Polyester micro plush
- Shed resistant
- Soft
- Rips easily
- Not waterproof
10. Petsure Pet Blanket
The Petsure Pet Blanket is the last model on our list. This brand comes in a two-pack of reversible, double-sided microfiber flannel blankets. They are very soft to the touch and are machine washable.
While we reviewed these blankets, we found them to be extremely lightweight and not very warm. The thin blankets are easily torn, even with light-duty use, and they are also prone to shedding the microfibers. They are also not waterproof, and one of the two blankets frayed around the edges.
- Two-pack
- Microfiber flannel
- Reversible
- Lightweight
- Thin
- Sheds
- Not waterproof
Buyer’s Guide: How to Choose the Best Dog Blankets
Let’s look at the most important things to consider when choosing a dog blanket for your pet.
Size
The blanket size is probably the first thing you are going to worry about when selecting a blanket. The best way to see what size blanket you need is to measure your dog from the collar to the beginning of the tail. Any blanket larger than this should suffice.
Fabric
The type of material is an important consideration because it will determine how much dog fur sticks to it or if your pet’s toys get trapped on it. Generally speaking, we want a fabric that collects dog hair to prevent it from landing on other surfaces, but we want the dog hair to clean off quickly.
Materials like silk and leather repel the dog hair while other materials like suede and velvet are magnets. Nylon materials will create static that attracts dog hair, and other airborne contaminants. Weavings and knittings can trap and hold the pet hair.
We recommend microfiber because it will hold the hair but can be wiped clean with a cloth.
Cleanup
We recommend checking to make sure you can wash the dog blanket in a washing machine before purchasing it. You will often need to launder the blanket after accidents and spills.
Durability
Pets can wear out their blankets very quickly, and if they have a lot of accidents, the continuous laundering will also wear them out. We recommend paying attention to the thickness of the material. Thicker material will last longer, hold up better in the wash, absorb more liquid, and provide more warmth for your pet.
We also recommend looking at the stitching in the blanket. Tighter stitching will be much more durable.
Water Resistance
If your pet is prone to accidents, you might want to look into getting a waterproof blanket. Some blankets use a membrane in between two pieces of fabric, but most spray a chemical on the inside of the two materials. This chemical is likely to wear off after a few cycles in the machine, so if you are buying then because your pet has accidents, you may have to buy them often.
Final Verdict
Hopefully, one of the blankets we reviewed works for your furry friend. Whether you’re just trying to get your blanket back or are more concerned with protecting your furniture, one of the options above should work.
We particularly liked the PetAmi Waterproof Dog Blanket for a few different reasons, mostly because it’s waterproof. Despite this, it’s still incredibly fluffy and comfortable. If you’re looking for something a little more budget-friendly, the Frisco Sherpa Dog Blanket is soft and cozy, and also somewhat stylish with a modern, geometric style.
