Raw Paws Tripe Stick Dog Treat Review

Our Final Verdict

We give Raw Paws 6-Inch Green Beef Tripe Stick dog food a rating of 4.7 out of 5 stars.

Introduction

Raw Paws is a relatively new pet food company, having only been around since 2014. The company’s products are geared toward dogs that are already eating or transitioning to a raw food diet.

Based out of Indianapolis, the company sources all its ingredients from ethical farms, and most of its products are either free-range or organic. They offer everything that a dog or cat needs: food, treats, supplements, and more.

As a result, everything they offer is extremely high-quality. It’s also expensive. This is premium chow for dogs whose owners value their health as much as any other member of the family. Everything we’ve tried from them has been fantastic, including these tripe sticks, but that’s to be expected, given what it costs.divider 9

Who Makes Raw Paws 6-Inch Green Beef Tripe Sticks and Where Are They Produced?

These tripe sticks are made by Raw Paws, a pet food company based out of Indianapolis, Indiana.

While the company is fairly young, they’ve diversified their offerings quickly, and the tripe sticks are just one of the hundreds of products they offer. Everything they make is geared toward a raw diet, so some of the offerings may be unusual if you’re used to the mass-produced food you buy at big box stores.

Which Types of Dogs Are Raw Paws 6-Inch Green Beef Tripe Stick Best Suited For?

Their target audience is dogs who are already eating a raw diet or are planning on transitioning to one soon. Many of their products are also ideal for dogs suffering from food allergies.

The idea behind this is to feed dogs a diet that they’d eat in the wild. That means no chemicals, dyes, or other additives; it also means grain-free recipes for the most part.

These tripe sticks fit into that ethos nicely. They have one ingredient: free-range beef tripe. As a result, they’re good for dogs with sensitive stomachs because they don’t have any extra ingredients and they’re fairly soft, making them great for senior dogs or dogs with dental issues.

Which Types of Dogs Might Do Better With a Different Brand?

There’s not really any tripe or bully sticks that could possibly be better for your dog, nutritionally speaking, as these are about as healthy as you can get.

However, since they’re fairly soft, they don’t last long. If you want something that will keep your pooch occupied for longer, a braided bully stick like these from Bones & Chew might be better. They’re not as good for your pup, though.

    Discussion of the Primary Ingredients

There is only one ingredient in these chews: free-range beef tripe. That means the cattle they’re harvested from ate only natural foods, with no hormones, chemicals, or antibiotics injected into them along the way.

That gives you complete knowledge of what your dog is eating, which is rare with dog treats. There are no weird chemicals or unpronounceable foods — just pure, natural meat.

The only downside to this is that if your dog doesn’t react well to the tripe, you’ll have a mess on your hands. Most dogs are fine with it, but it may be too rich for some, especially if they’re accustomed to a bland, processed diet.

    These Treats Smell

You’ll know when the bag is open because the odor hits you right in the face. While the bag is resealable, it doesn’t do much to contain the smell, so we recommend switching them to a Ziploc bag.

However, while the aroma might gross you out, your dog will likely love it. It’ll be enough to bring them in from another room and definitely get their tails wagging.

    Tripe Is Loaded With Probiotics

Tripe is something of a superfood, as it’s loaded with a wide range of vitamins and minerals that aren’t found in meat taken from other parts of the body. One of the most important benefits it offers, however, is a large number of probiotics.

These probiotics can improve your dog’s digestion, helping them to absorb more nutrients and improving the quality of their waste. They also have immune-boosting qualities, as the digestive tract is one of the main creators of antibodies and immune cells.

Paradoxically, though, too many of these treats can upset your dog’s tummy. That’s because most dogs aren’t used to eating meat this rich. As a result, we’d recommend limiting your pup’s intake to one or two of these treats a week.

These Sticks Can Help Clean Your Dog’s Teeth

Tripe sticks have several benefits: They can be a reward for your dog for being good, they can keep your pup occupied, and they’re loaded with protein and other nutrients. One of the biggest benefits, though, may be the fact that they clean your dog’s teeth as they chew.

These sticks have a rough texture, so while your dog gnaws on them, the ridges of the stick remove plaque, tartar, and other buildup from the teeth and gums. While this isn’t a replacement for regular brushing, every little bit helps, and giving your pooch a delicious snack is a much easier way to practice oral hygiene than chasing them around with a toothbrush.

Review of Raw Paws 6-Inch Green Beef Tripe Stick

There’s nothing on the package to be worried about with these tripe sticks. They have one ingredient and it’s a good one: beef tripe.

But what did our taste testers think?

We had two large dogs, a Siberian Husky-Bulldog mix and Great Dane-Pit Bull mix, as well as a medium-sized Rottweiler-Wire Fox Terrier mix.

It should be noted that these treats are designed for medium-sized dogs, but they’re suitable for breeds of any size. Also, the Rottweiler mix tends to be picky and has a sensitive stomach.

The smell hits you as soon as you open the bag. It’s not a pleasant aroma, and it’s hard to find anything to compare it to. Regardless, we strongly recommend against sticking your nose in the bag and taking a big whiff.

However, the dogs picked up on the odor almost immediately. While they had been laying on the floor when the bag was opened, they were up and begging within seconds.

We handed each dog a treat and made note of the time. Normally, these dogs will sniff anything we offer them for a second or two before deciding to take it. That didn’t happen with these tripe sticks, so presumably, the strong odor got their drool motors running. They immediately snatched them up and went to their respective chewing corners.

What happened next was both good and bad. The bad was that the larger dogs demolished their treats in under a minute, whereas the medium-sized one took around 4 minutes to finish hers. That means you shouldn’t expect these treats to last that long, which is somewhat disappointing, given the price.

The good news, though, is that the dogs clearly loved the taste. This is not a treat that’s likely to get ignored or rejected; instead, your biggest problem will likely be getting your fingers out of the way in time.

Of course, you can’t draw conclusions about the nutritional benefit of these treats after only giving your dog a stick or two, so we don’t know if the probiotics, protein, and other nutrients are working wonders for these pups’ digestive systems.

However, we can report that there were no digestive issues as a result of eating them. Also, the dogs didn’t have horrible doggy breath, so you don’t have to worry about them peeling the paint off the walls every time they have a treat.

Their teeth might have been marginally cleaner, but it’s hard to make much of a difference when the treat disappears in a minute or two.

All in all, these sticks are a healthy way to treat your dog, and they’ll almost certainly lose their minds over them. Just don’t expect them to last long if you have powerful chewers.

    Conclusion

It’s hard to find a healthy treat for dogs that they’ll actually eat, but Raw Paws 6-Inch Green Beef Tripe Sticks manage to thread that needle nicely. Most dogs will devour them as quickly as possible, and you can be happy that they’ll only eat natural meat, rather than a bunch of chemicals and additives.

That’s not to say that they’re perfect, though. They’re extremely smelly and don’t last long, especially given their price.

However, for an occasional high-value treat, you can’t do much better than these tripe sticks. If nothing else, they’re a great way to convince your dog to behave for a change.
