About Pumpkin Pet Insurance

Pumpkin Pet Insurance is an excellent place to go if you’re looking for some fairly good coverage for your cat or dog. They don’t just cover the basics like some other insurance companies; they also cover items such as prescription foods and microchipping. However, like most pet insurance companies, they do not cover certain preventative care, like spaying and neutering. The company does offer a wellness add-on, though, that can help cover the cost of preventative care.

Pumpkin Pet Insurance is also a bit pricier than other pet insurance companies, but this is mostly due to their high reimbursement rate. The reimbursement rate is excellent, though, so it should balance out the higher cost of insurance. Something else to watch out for price-wise is that certain dog breeds will automatically have higher premiums than others.

If you’re located in the United States or Canada, Pumpkin Pet Insurance can certainly offer you fairly good help with your pet’s healthcare.

Base Policy

Pumpkin Pet Insurance has a base accident and illness policy that covers quite a bit.

Coverage for dogs includes swallowed objects, broken bones, hip dysplasia, skin and eye and ear infections, cancer, digestive issues, prescription meds, alternative therapies, hereditary conditions, behavioral issues, and more. However, coverage for dogs does not include items such as spaying/neutering or dental work that is non-illness related.

Coverage for cats is the same in that it covers a ton of necessary items, such as UTIs, respiratory infections, cancer, diabetes when your cat eats something toxic, prescription meds, surgery, hereditary conditions, microchipping, and more. Non-covered items are the same as for dogs.

And the base plan comes with a 90% reimbursement rate (the only reimbursement rate there is), which is much higher than many insurance companies have.

Customizations

The customizations you can make for your plan will be in choosing your deductible and annual limit. For dogs, you have the option of choosing a deductible of $100, $250, or $500. Annual limit choices are $10,000, $20,000, or unlimited. For felines, your deductible options are $100, $250, $500, or $1000 while the annual limit selection includes $7,000, $15,000, or unlimited. The reimbursement rate is 90% across the board and cannot be changed.

Preventive Essentials

The only other customization you can make to your pet’s insurance is by adding on the Preventive Essentials wellness package. This add-on for canines includes coverage that allows for a yearly wellness exam, yearly blood test for tick disease and heartworms, yearly test for intestinal worms, and two vaccines for the prevention of disease. For cats, the Preventive Essentials plan covers a yearly wellness exam, a yearly test for intestinal worms, and one vaccine.

So, while the add-on covers a few basic necessities, it really doesn’t cover a lot. And it can add anywhere from $12–$20 to your monthly premium (dependent upon the type of animal you have, the breed, and your pet’s age), so overall, it might not be worth the cost.

Deductibles & Claims

Pumpkin Pet Insurance gives you three options for deductibles which is fairly moderate (some companies offer up to five). For both dogs and cats, you can choose between deductibles of $100, $250, $500, or $1000. Obviously, the higher the deductible, the lower your monthly premium.

You also get the choice of three annual limit coverages, though those differ for canines and felines. With dogs, you have the option of $10,000, $20,000, or unlimited; with cats, you get to pick from $7,000, $15,000, or unlimited.

Filing claims with Pumpkin Pet Insurance is a straightforward process. You only have to log into your account and go to your “Claims” page, then follow the instructions on how to enter claim details. You’ll also need to upload a photo or copy of the vet bill and any medical records that might be necessary for the claim.

Or, if you’d rather, you can print out a claim form, fill it out, and then email it and the vet bill to Pumpkin’s claim service.

Tracking claim statuses is easy as well, as you can see how your claim is coming along by going to the “Claims” section of your account at any time.

What Does Pumpkin Pet Insurance Cover?

The basic Pumpkin Pet Insurance accident and illness plan covers quite a bit for both cats and dogs, as you can see below. According to the sample policy, everything is covered by the general annual limit—there doesn’t seem to be an annual limit for each procedure. So, your annual limit will be dependent upon which of the three options you choose for your pet.

Covered
  • Broken bones
  • Diabetes
  • Cancer
  • Hereditary conditions
  • Surgery
  • Microchipping
  • Alternative therapies
Not Covered
  • Spay/neuter
  • Dental work not related to illness
  • Cosmetic work

Pre-Existing Conditions

Like the majority of pet insurance companies, Pumpkin plans do not cover pre-existing conditions. But that doesn’t mean pre-existing conditions can’t be covered in the future. Confused? Well, if a pre-existing condition is something that can be cured and has been cured for at least 180 days with no symptoms or treatment, then your Pumpkin insurance plan would cover it if it happened again. The only exception is ligament conditions for the hind legs and knee, which will never be covered if pre-existing.

Waiting Periods

Again, like all pet insurance companies, Pumpkin Pet Insurance does have a 14-day waiting period. That means coverage for your pet won’t start until 14 days after the policy begins.

However, if you did the Preventive Essentials as an add-on, that will actually start right away. Plus, with the Preventive Essentials add-on, you can actually receive a refund for services covered by the plan if you had them done up to 14 days prior to getting the add-on.

Reviews from Customers

Pumpkin Pet Insurance has a 4.4-star rating on TrustPilot, with most people seeming to be big fans.

A lot of people greatly enjoy the 90% reimbursement rate, and several people found the Preventive Essentials add-on to be worth the price, despite it only covering a limited amount. People also praised the claim turn-around for being so fast (3 weeks or less), as well as the company’s customer service is easy to reach out to and quick to respond.

However, some people did have issues with claims—specifically saying that their first claims were processed in a matter of days, but claims after that took a few weeks to process. And some people mentioned they wished that Pumpkin had an app they could use as it would make life easier.

Overall, though, most reviews are quite positive, and people seem happy with the service Pumpkin provides.

FAQ

Is there a multi-pet discount?

Absolutely! Pumpkin has a 10% Fur Family discount, meaning that for every pet you enroll after the first one, you receive 10% off their plans.

How are claim reimbursements received?

You can get your reimbursements from claims in two ways: check or direct deposit. And if you’re getting a claim reimbursement for the Preventive Essentials add-on, you can get it by eCheck.

If I cancel my plan, can I get a refund?

You can cancel your insurance plan or insurance and Preventive Essentials plan any time you’d like. However, whether you are able to get any sort of refund will depend on when you cancel, your geographical location, and what benefits you’ve already been reimbursed for. You’ll need to check their website for details, as there are several different considerations.

Our Verdict

All in all, Pumpkin Pet Insurance offers pretty excellent coverage. They may be a bit higher in price than other insurance companies, but they also cover some things that others don’t, such as alternative therapies or microchipping. And though the Preventive Essentials add-on only covers a few basics, people seem pretty pleased to have it. Plus, the 90% reimbursement rate across the board is great.

However, there are a few items Pumpkin won’t cover, like spaying and neutering, and a few people did have complaints about difficulties in getting reimbursed or with customer service.

But if you’re looking for a good insurance company, it seems as if Pumpkin fits the bill.
