You know the Poogle is something special since the Beagle and Poodle are among the top 10 most popular breeds, according to the American Kennel Club (AKC). They have the elegance and grace of the Poodle and the tireless energy and vibrancy of the Beagle with their natural curiosity and welcoming friendliness. While not the best watchdog, the Poogle is an ideal family pet that brings the best of both worlds home.

Both breeds have a long history that stretches back hundreds of years. The Poogle is a hybrid or designer dog that gained popularity in the 1980s. Several organizations recognize them, including the American Canine Hybrid Club. While there are three sizes of Poodles, you’re more likely to see the Miniature Poodle cross.

It’s essential to understand that breeders bred the Beagle and Poodle for specific jobs. The Beagle hunted rabbits, and the Poodle retrieved waterfowl. They both need something to do to prevent boredom and undesirable behaviors like howling. They have a moderate to high tendency to bark.

On the positive side, Poogles love attention and expect it from you. The Poodle has a fun-loving nature that borders on goofiness sometimes.  The same applies to Beagles. Both breeds are happy dogs that can make a welcome addition to your home. Poogles do best in an active household to match their exuberant energy.

Poogles make excellent pets for families or individuals. The key to a great relationship for both of you is a commitment to spending time together. If left alone too often, they can experience separation anxiety. If you’re looking for a running partner, a Poogle fits the bill.

3 Little-Known Facts About the Poogle

Designer dog breeds like the Poogle are rare, so you can expect to pay more for them. Because of the three sizes of poodles, there is some variation in the hybrid. You can easily expect to pay north of $500 because of their desirability and rarity. To save you the heartache, we’d recommend genetic testing for common health conditions like hip dysplasia.

1. The Poodle Isn’t French

While many people associate the Poodle with France, its origin and name are German. The German word “pudel” refers to their water-loving nature. Even though the breed is part of the Non-Sporting Group, AKC allows it to participate in Retriever Hunting Tests, the only exception for its class.

2. The King of Rock-n-Roll Loved Poodles

Elvis Presley adored his poodle companions. A Poodle even accompanied him when he served in the US Army in Germany. He loved this breed so much that he gave several of his girlfriends one as a gift, including his wife, Priscilla. But the King wasn’t the only fan. Katharine Hepburn, Jackie Kennedy, and Marilyn Monroe loved their pampered Poodles.

3. The World’s Most Famous Beagle Was Almost Named Sniffy

Snoopy is probably the most well-known and beloved of all beagles. Cartoonist Charles Schultz looked no further than his home for inspiration from his dog, Spike. Sniffy was his original pick for the name of his famous pup. But Mom knows best, especially when she suggested the name Snoopy instead.

Temperament & Intelligence of the Poogle 🧠

Intelligent dogs can be challenging for pet owners, and a smart dog needs a job. If they can’t find anything to occupy their time, they’ll resort to destructive behavior. The Poodle and Beagle can be stubborn, but with thorough training, your Poogle can become a well-behaved canine.

It’s also essential to consider the dogs’ hunting background. Beagles chase anything that runs away from them. It’s their instinct. The Poodle in your Poogle is more of a home buddy. However, those drives don’t lie too far below the surface.

For all their intelligence, Poogles want a stable family life. An active lifestyle only goes so far with them. They do best in homes where there is a routine and not a lot of surprises. They’ll be happier in less hectic households.

Are These Dogs Good for Families? 🏡

Poogles love attention, and a home with a family is an excellent option for them, assuming someone is always around to give them love and take them for a walk. They tolerate the affection that children can lavish on them. Of course, the kids must know how to treat pets and not cross the line. That’s your job as a parent.

Does This Breed Get Along with Other Pets? 🐶 😽

Poogles tolerate other dogs, especially when given the proper socialization. It’s part of their nature as hunting dogs to accept the other members of their pack. The same doesn’t always apply to other pets like cats. Remember that the Beagle will chase prey. If your kitten runs away, your Poogle might not be far behind.

Things to Know When Owning a Poogle:

It’s easy to look at a puppy and forget that they’ll be an adult someday. Before adopting a Poogle, take a look at the sections below to make sure they’re the right fit for your home.

Food & Diet Requirements 🦴

We recommend feeding your Poogle a diet for active dogs to keep up with their energy needs. They love to run and play and need the fuel to support it. Watch what they eat since they can become overweight. Also, we also suggest not using rodenticides in your yard because they will chase animals that run away from them.

Exercise 🐕

Energetic is an apt description for a Poogle since they’re active and need to run and play. If you have a large backyard, it may suffice. However, remember our advice about Poogles getting bored. If they’re left alone in the yard, they may start digging and barking.

Walking your Poogle and playing with them every day is vital for their mental and physical health. It’s best to establish a specific time that you’ll exercise your Poogle; they’ll thrive when they have something to look forward to.

Training 🦮

Training is a challenge. The Poodle is intelligent but is easier to train than the Beagle. The Beagle has an attitude that you need to consider.  Therefore, the Poogle requires thorough training, and if you’re experiencing problems, you can enroll your pup in obedience classes.

First-time owners may not have the patience to train a Poogle, but once trained, they make incredible pets.

Grooming ✂️

Genetics is the wild card here. Poodles don’t shed, but their curly hair requires regular grooming. They need their hair trimmed every 4 to 6 weeks to keep it healthy. If their coat is more like a Beagle, weekly brushing will keep their skin healthy. It’s also an excellent way to bond with your pet. Beagles have an oily coat, and regular ear cleaning is essential.

On the positive side, their high activity level will likely keep their toenails trimmed. However, you should check their feet and pads occasionally. Likewise, scan their coat frequently for ticks because of their inquisitive nature. Poogles like to go and explore off the beaten path.

Health and Conditions ❤️

Every breed has health issues. It’s not necessarily a reason to avoid getting a specific dog. However, the wise pet owner knows what they can expect down the line to take the proper steps.

Minor Conditions
  • Eye infections
  • Bacterial infections on paws from running outside
  • Ear mites
Serious Conditions
  • Hip dysplasia
  • Patellar luxation
  • Dental diseases
  • Obesity

Male vs Female

Other than the weight and height differences, male and female Poogles are similar. Females tend to mature faster and have an edge in intelligence because of their role as mothers.

Male Poogles show that bravado side but are also more laid-back without the same parenting responsibilities. Some pet owners say females are more intelligent, which may relate more to their biological role than anything else.

Final Thoughts

To call this Beagle Poodle mix a handful is very much an understatement. This sweet and friendly dog needs lots of love and activity to be happy. If you can provide enough mental and physical stimulation, they make an excellent pet and companion.

The Poogle will challenge you but will be a faithful friend. Their personality is ideal for those who want a relationship with their pet that transcends simply being a pet owner.
