The Doxle is a mixed breed created by combining the Beagle with the Dachshund. You may find a Doxle with a few other names, including Beashund, Beweenie, and Doxies. It is a medium-sized breed that can weigh up to 30 pounds when fully grown. Their appearance will vary depending on which parent they take after. There are also toy miniature and standard-sized Dachshunds, so the size of your dog can also vary. They tend to have long bodies with short legs, long muzzles, and floppy ears.

Doxles are intelligent and watchful, which makes them great watchdogs. This breed does tend to bark a lot, especially around strangers, which also helps with their guarding duty. They can also be stubborn and like to dig a hole in the yard, so it’s best to designate a spot for them to go to work.

Temperament & Intelligence of the Doxle 🧠

Doxles are great family dogs and companions. They are curious, attentive, active, and enjoy playing with children. They are also great pets for the elderly, as well as people who have a hard time getting around on their own. They are quite adaptable and can make a home in almost any environment except in extreme temperatures. Doxles can be stubborn, and they like to bark, dig, and chew.

Are These Dogs Good for Families? 🏡

The Doxle is a fantastic breed for family life, and they enjoy being around and playing with children. Their watchful nature makes them great watchdogs, and they can be quite protective of their family. They are self-sufficient and helpful, so they are also great pets for the elderly.

Does This Breed Get Along with Other Pets? 🐶 😽

The Doxie gets along very well with most other family pets. The exception is birds, hamsters, and other similar animals whose small size can trigger their instincts to hunt. Its hunting instincts can also be triggered by small animals in the yard, like squirrels and rabbits. You can cut down on these behaviors by socializing your pet early.

Divider 4Things to Know When Owning a Doxle

In this section, we’ll discuss several things that you should consider before you make a purchase.

Food and Diet Requirements 🦴

The Doxle is a medium-sized dog and will require a food high in protein with whole meat like beef, chicken, lamb, or duck listed as its first ingredient. You should avoid brands that do not have whole meat listed as their first ingredient and foods that contain meat byproducts or chemical preservatives. Foods that contain antioxidants, probiotics, and omega fats, are highly recommended to improve development and enhance the immune system. Always follow the feeding instructions exactly as stated and divide the food over several meals.

Dry dog kibble is the top choice for daily meals, but home-cooked treats are often healthier for your Beagle Dachshund Mix and can eliminate the worry. You can find several cookbooks online that will help you produce healthy treats for your pet that can reduce the risk of obesity and other health problems.

Daily Exercise Requirements 🐕

The Doxle is an active dog, but it does not require much exercise, which is one reason it’s great for elderly or immobile owners. A few minutes of fetch out in the yard each day is usually more than satisfactory, as is a short walk around the block.

Training 🦮

The Doxle is an intelligent dog that is more than capable of learning almost any command and is even capable of multistep tasks and puzzle-solving. The challenge with training this breed is that they can become very stubborn and lose interest quickly. Using plenty of positive reinforcement in the form of treats and praise is essential to completing a successful training exercise. A consistent training schedule and technique are also critical, and an inconsistent approach to training is the biggest reason the Beagle Dachshund mix fails to learn commands.

Grooming ✂️

A Doxl needs regular grooming, and you will need to brush your pet about three times a week. They don’t shed a lot, so regular brushing will help keep the fur off your furniture while keeping the coat looking neat. Brushing also improves circulation in the skin.

Besides brushing, you will need to brush their teeth regularly to keep dental disease at bay and clip the nails.

Health and Conditions ❤️

Many mixed breeds suffer fewer genetic disorders than purebreds because good breeders can selectively breed puppies without the bad genes. However, there are still a few things you should be on the lookout for, and we’ll discuss those here.

Minor Conditions
  • Deafness

Deafness is not common but is still possible in the Doxle. Deafness is a genetic disorder that comes from its Dachshund parent. A good breeder will attempt to use selective breeding to create a Doxle without the deafness gene, but it’s not always possible. Most dogs can still live a full, happy life while deaf.

  • Epilepsy

Epilepsy is the most common neurological disorder found in dogs, and it can affect your Doxle as well. Epilepsy is recurrent unprovoked seizures. If your dog is epileptic and has a seizure, you will need to keep a detailed diary of everything you see so you can report it to the veterinarian. There are several medications available that can help reduce the number of seizures and improve the quality of life for your pet.

Serious Conditions
  • Intervertible Disc Disease

Intervertible disc disease is a condition where the disks in the back begin to break down. This degeneration causes pain in the neck and back and can spread to other joints as well. Symptoms include not wanting to eat, a tight abdomen, and crying when lifted. There are several treatments available to help improve your pet’s quality of life.

  • Bloat

Bloat is a condition that affects many dog breeds and is common in deep-chested dogs and larger dogs, but it can also occur in the Doxle. Bloat is what happens when your pet swallows too much air, usually while eating. The excess air in the stomach first puts pressure on the back legs and organs and can cut off circulation. It can also cause the stomach to flip on itself, requiring surgery and damaging the stomach lining.

Symptoms of bloat can begin suddenly and progress quickly. Symptoms include anxiety and an inability to throw up. The stomach will be bloated, and they may begin to drool. It’s important to get to a pet hospital immediately if you notice these symptoms.

Divider 5Male vs Female

Both the male and female Doxle have a very similar appearance and are both about the same weight and height. However, the female of this breed tends to be slightly more dominant and will fight with other dogs of the same sex. Males tend to enjoy games and are more affectionate.

Summary

The Doxle is perfect for large families and will spend many hours playing games with the children. It doesn’t need a lot of exercise, so you won’t need to set aside large portions of your day, and it’s a fantastic watchdog that will let you know if any intruders are nearby.

We hope you enjoyed this look at the Beagle and Dachshund mix, and your interest in this breed has grown.
