About Bivvy

Bivvy pet insurance appeals to those who want a simple policy to cover their pet. It’s excellent for those on a budget, as you only pay a low monthly premium that varies depending on your state. The most common premium we’ve seen on the website is $14 per month. Bivvy may not be a good option if you want customizable options, such as choosing your deductible and reimbursement rates. However, this process can become confusing, and Bivvy takes the confusion away by offering one simple policy.

The 50% reimbursement rate is nothing to cheer about, and the $25,000 maximum limit for the lifetime of your pet is also quite low compared to other pet insurance companies. The $250 deductible is low. However, the 50% reimbursement rate still leaves you with a good portion of the vet bill to pay yourself.

Bivvy doesn’t just cover dogs and cats; they also cover exotic pets, such as birds, ferrets, amphibians, hamsters, guinea pigs, rabbits, rats, hedgehogs, opossums, and more.

Base Policy

Bivvy pet insurance offers an accident and illness plan that covers a wide range of conditions, such as hereditary conditions, congenital conditions, chronic conditions, cancer, diagnostic treatment, blood tests, X-rays, ultrasounds, surgery, hospitalization, prescription medications, emergency care, and even orthodontic treatment.

Bivvy’s base policy is very affordable compared to other pet insurance companies. The base policy covers your pet regardless of breed, sex, age, and size of your dog or cat. If you’re looking for a base policy at a low price per month, Bivvy could be a good choice for you and your pet.

Customizations

Unlike most pet insurance companies, Bivvy does not give you the option of customizing your deductible or reimbursement rates. You pay a flat monthly fee, which can take some of the headaches away from figuring out the best option for you and your pocketbook.

Wellness Package

Bivvy offers a Wellness Care package you can add to your policy for an extra $9 per month. The package covers routine vaccinations, checkups, heartworm tests, flea, tick, and heartworm prevention, fecal testing, urinalysis, FELV screening, and deworming.

Coverage

Bivvy is quite affordable compared to other pet insurance companies and covers many illnesses and accidents. Bivvy’s policy is straightforward and easy to understand. One drawback, however, is that they only cover 50% of services, which is low compared to its competitors.  A positive is that the policy is transparent and easy to understand. Most pet insurance companies allow you to choose what type of coverage you want, but with Bivvy, what you see is what you get.

Deductibles & Claims

Bivvy’s deductibles are the same across the board, no matter your pet’s age, breed, size, or sex, which is a $250 annual deductible. You’ll have to meet this deductible before any vet bill is covered. After you’ve met the deductible, Bivvy will cover 50% of the charges accrued, which is the coinsurance.

For example, if you are left with a $500 vet bill, and you’ve met the $250 annual deductible, Bivvy will reimburse you 50% of the $500 vet bill ($250). There is no limit to how many claims you can submit yearly, but they will only cover up to $3,500 per policy per year. They will cover up to $25,000 during the lifetime of your pet.

As for claims, Bivvy reimburses you directly rather than the veterinarian you used. You can submit claims directly from the website under the pet parent portal, and it’s easy to use. Simply send a copy of the vet bill, and once reviewed, Bivvy will send you a check for the covered items.

You don’t need an insurance card, and you can see any licensed vet of your choosing. They review claims within one business day; once reviewed, a claim can be processed within minutes. Keep in mind that you will have to pay the entire vet bill upfront at the time of service.

As we’ve mentioned, Bivvy’s accident and illness plan covers a wide range of illnesses, such as hereditary conditions, congenital conditions, chronic conditions, cancer, diagnostic treatment, blood tests, x-rays, ultrasounds, surgery, hospitalization, prescription medications, emergency care, and even orthodontic treatment. If you want wellness exams covered, you’ll need to purchase the Wellness Care package for an extra $9 per month.

Pre-Existing Conditions

Pre-existing conditions are any conditions your pet had prior to purchasing a pet insurance policy. The standard timeframe is 12–24 months, meaning a condition must be symptom-free and healed for at least 12–24 months prior to obtaining a policy. You won’t find any pet insurance company that covers pre-existing conditions, and Bivvy is no different. Bivvy’s pre-existing policy is 12 months.

Waiting Periods

The waiting period is the time you have to wait for any condition to be covered under the policy. If an accident or illness takes place before the waiting period is over, the veterinary expenses will not be covered. With that said, Bivvy has a 30-day waiting period for illness, a 14-day waiting period for accidents, and a 6-month waiting period for orthopedic conditions.

Bivvy’s waiting period for illness is rather long compared to its competitors, as most pet insurance companies have anywhere from a 2–5-day waiting period before coverage kicks in.

Reviews from Customers

Customer reviews are an excellent way to get a feel for the company itself. We examined reviews from current customers to give you an idea about Bivvy as a whole. The reviews we’ve seen are mostly positive, such as the simplicity of the policy and knowing everything upfront, the low monthly premiums, quick claims processing, and the ease of filing claims.

Signing up for multiple pets can get confusing on the site, and it’s hard to get in touch with their customer service department. It’s also not easy to update your payment options from the website.

FAQ

You can buy separate policies for each pet you have. A bonus is that your pet is not required to have a vet exam before obtaining a policy. All that’s required is signing your pet up on the website. You can add a backup payment method in the event your payment doesn’t go through on the current payment option you have chosen. This prohibits a cancellation of the policy due to no payment being made.

The premium starts right after signing up but beware of the waiting periods before you use the insurance. If you file a claim before the waiting period ends, the services will not be covered.

Our Verdict

Bivvy pet insurance is an excellent option for those on a budget who want coverage for their pets. They cover a vast amount of procedures and tests, and the low monthly premiums are affordable. They have no age limit, and the quote does not change according to your pet’s breed, size, age, or sex. They do not rank well regarding reimbursement rates, as the 50% rate is relatively low, but the low premiums make having a policy accessible for many pet parents.
