The 10 Best Ultrasonic Bark Control Devices:
1. KoolaMo Pop V Anti Barking Device – Best Overall
The KoolaMo Pop V Anti Barking Device is our choice for the best overall ultrasonic bark control devices. This barking control device is small and lightweight. It will respond to barking with an ultrasonic sound that deters your pet from barking further. It’s directional so you can point it in a direction for better results, and you can choose between different ranges or strengths. It’s weather-resistant and can be left outside.
While we were trying out this device, we found that our dogs would only bark once or twice, and the second bark was always much quieter than the first. The biggest downside to this device is that it devours the 9-volt battery. You will have to change it every week or two, depending on how persistent you dogs are about barking.
2. Zephyr Element Anti Barking Device – Best Value
The Zephyr Element Anti Barking Device is our choice for the best value. We believe that it is the best ultrasonic bark control device for the money, and we hope you agree. This device is available at a low cost and has a long-range. Easy push-button control makes it easy and fast, and an included belt clip makes it easy to keep with you at all times. It also has a small LED light that lets you know when the batteries need replacement.
We found that this device worked well, and often, only the sight of it was needed to prevent our dogs from barking. It does have small parts that your pet or child might get ahold of and eat. Our biggest problem with this device is that it’s a manual device. It’s not something we could place in our yard to curb barking throughout the day, or more importantly, throughout the night.
The Modus UBC-03 Ultrasonic Anti Barking Device is our premium choice ultrasonic bark control device. This model has a long-range, so you can curb your pets barking from across the yard or home. It has a helpful green LED that lets you know when the device is working and takes out the guesswork. The ergonomic design is comfortable in your hand.
The downside to our premium choice is that it is expensive, and while we thought it worked quite well, it’s strictly point-and-shoot. There’s no automatic control, so it’s not something you can leave in your yard to cut down on barking throughout the day.
4. PetSafe PBC-1000 Ultrasonic Bark Control
The PetSafe PBC-1000 Ultrasonic Indoor Bark Control features free-standing or handheld capability. You can use it as a point and click device for help training your pet and dealing with specific problems or for general barking while you’re not watching. This brand is for indoor use and has a 25-foot range, so it’s pretty good for covering one floor of your home.
The downsides include not having an on/off switch, so the device is continuously draining power unless you remove the battery. It’s also extremely sensitive, and you may find it hard to adjust to prevent it from going off all the time. This sensitivity can stress out your pet and will use up the batteries very quickly.
5. Humutan Ultrasonic Anti Barking Device
The Humutan Ultrasonic Anti Barking Device is an outdoor ultrasonic bark controller. It features a unique birdhouse design that blends in nicely with your yard. It’s waterproof and can detect dog barks up to 50-feet away. It has three volume settings that help you adjust range and effectiveness.
The downsides of this model start with its cheap plastic construction. It’s thin and will not last long in the hot sun, nor will it survive a fall. You can only use this device outdoors, so it has limited potential as a training tool. We found that it does indeed detect barks at 50 feet but has difficulty sending the ultrasonic signal that far. Dogs that far away only wear down the battery, which already has a short life.
6. ELenest Anti Barking Device
The ELenest Anti Barking Device is the second ultrasonic bark controller with an elegant birdhouse design. This model features four different intensity settings to help dial in an adequate signal. It’s waterproof and features a low battery indicator.
We like the birdhouse design, and the plastic construction felt a bit more durable than some of the others we have tried out. The downside of this brand is that it didn’t seem to put out a loud enough signal to affect our dogs barking. We tried all of the range settings, and there was no change. When we placed it in our home away from wind and traffic, the higher range settings did produce some results.
7. Zelers Dog Bark Control Device
The Zelers Dog Bark Control Device is a compact ultrasonic dog bark control device. It’s rated for indoor and outdoor use. It’s waterproof and can detect barks up to 50-feet away.
We were surprised by how tiny this device is as it’s only slightly larger than a 9-volt battery. The problem with it being so small is that it’s easy to lose unless you mount it permanently. We also noticed that the on/off switch on this device was flimsy when we accidentally broke ours off.
8. Vitorun Handheld Dog Repellent
The Vitorun Handheld Dog Repellent is a multifunction bark control device. This device is to repel dogs as well as stop their barking. Two intense LEDs emit a powerful visible and infrared light for raining your dog visually and sonically. The three settings allow you to select between light only, light and sound, and sound alone.
While we used this device, we didn’t have a lot of faith in the infrared part, but the ultrasonic part is potent. When operating this device as an ultrasonic bark control device, it’s easy to forget that its real purpose is as a security device. The ultrasound emitted can be too harsh for some pets and may even damage their hearing if used carelessly. The other downside to this device is that there is no stand-alone mode. The absent automatic mode means there is no way to control barking while you sleep or are away.
Another solution for a noisy dog: Citronella bark collars
9. petacc Ultrasonic Dog Barking Control
The petacc Ultrasonic Dog Barking Deterrent is a compact bark control device shaped like a dog bone. This device is to accompany you when you walk your dog to help prevent your dog from barking as well as diffuse any situations with other dogs you come across while going for your stroll. Since it’s for walking, it features a handy LED lamp to illuminate your way. It also features a built-in rechargeable battery, so you never need to worry about replacements.
While we used it, we felt that the ultrasonic signal wasn’t powerful enough to prevent, or even deter, our dogs from barking. The LED lamp is excellent for late-night walks with our pets, but it loses its charge quickly.
10. Tenlso Ultrasonic Dog Bark Controller
The Tenlso Ultrasonic Dog Bark Controller is the last ultrasonic bark controller on our list. This model features four sensitivity settings to dial in the perfect amount of bark deterrent. It also features a handy wall mount for permanently installing it out of the way. It also plugs directly into the wall, so you never need to worry about replacing batteries or charging.
Unfortunately, this model is only water-resistant, so you cannot expose it to rain or dew, which limits its outside usefulness. We also didn’t like the design of this model. It doesn’t mount flush against the wall; instead, you install a mounting plate to the wall and attach the device to that. This system allows you to remove the device from the plate once installed, but the only reason to remove it is to adjust the sensitivity. When the bark controller is attached to the wall plate, it juts out and is extremely fragile. Any accidental bump will break the mount. We would have liked this model a lot more if they brought the sensitivity setting to the front so it can mount firmly to the wall. It’s also challenging to adjust the sensitivity settings, and it requires a screwdriver.
Let’s go over some things that might be important when choosing your ultrasonic bark control device.
How It Works
Ultrasonic bark control devices typically work by producing a high pitch tone that’s outside the range of human hearing. This high-pitched tone is usually around 25,000 hertz, while the average human can only hear up to about 20,000 hertz if their ears are in excellent condition. This noise is bothersome to many dogs, and it will usually cause them to stop what they are doing. When used with a proper training routine ultrasonic bark control device are very effective.
Ultrasonic devices are certainly a much safer and humane way to train your pet not to bark than electric shock collars. However, these devices can still be quite dangerous. The high-pitched ultrasonic sound that they create bothers your dog enough to stop what they are doing, and it can also be painful. We have no way of knowing how loud these devices are because we can’t hear them, but ears sensitive to those frequencies are susceptible to damage from prolonged exposure.
We recommend using bark control devices that have multiple settings. Always start on the lowest setting and only increase it if you are not getting the result you want. Never increase it more than required to do the job.
If you notice your pet exhibiting any signs of pain, discontinue use immediately.
There are two main types of ultrasonic bark control devices, and they are handheld and stand-alone.
Point and click devices are the handheld devices used for training. These devices usually have a button that activates the device. The battery in these devices lasts longer because you only use it when you need it.
These devices are better for when your pet is with you.
Stand-alone devices are automatic. You commonly leave these devices in the yard, or in the home where they listen for the sound of a bark. When they hear a bark, they play the tone. The battery that powers these devices runs down much quicker because they remain active.
These devices are better when you are not with your pet.
Have a Plan
When using the handheld type devices, we recommend setting up a plan and slowly curbing your dogs barking as opposed to pressing the button every time they do something wrong. Always use verbal commands along with the sonic treatments and never let anyone else use the device.
Does It Work?
Ultrasonic devices have proven to be effective at stopping dogs from barking, and curbing other bad habits. It has also proven effective on cats and other animals, but some things will prevent it from working.
All dogs are different. They like different foods and different games. Some dogs will be more sensitive than others to the tone the bark control devices produce. Some dogs will run and hide, and some will not even notice it.
Never use these devices on puppies younger than six months or dogs older than eight years. Very similar to humans, many dogs lose their hearing slowly as they age. Hearing loss affects the high frequencies, and it wouldn’t be uncommon for an older dog not to hear the tone produced by these devices.
Some pets can get used to the sound and it will no longer be an effective way to curb their behavior. Their ability to become resistant to the device has a lot to do with how strongly they want to do the thing the sound is trying to prevent them from doing.
Number of Dogs
Ultrasonic bark control devices are only useful when there is only one pet. If you have more than one dog or any other type of animal, they will also be affected by the sound. When one dog barks, they will all be punished. Besides being hard on all of the animals, it will also confuse them as to what is causing the sound, and the dogs will continue to bark.
We hope that you have enjoyed reading over our ultrasonic bark control reviews and buyer’s guide. We highly recommend the KoolaMo Pop V Anti Barking Device, our choice for the best overall. This device is a stand-alone model that is lightweight and compact. It has multiple settings and we found it to work well. The Zephyr Element Anti Barking Device is our pick for the best value. This device is handheld, has a long-range, and works well.
