If you enjoy hiking or going for long walks, it is great to have a water bottle specifically for your dog so you don’t have to worry about finding water for them to drink.
Staying hydrated is important for dogs because they lose water through the bottom of their paws, when they pant, and from the release of body fluids. Daily fluid requirements for a dog are 1 ounce of water per each pound of weight. So, if your dog weighs 30 pounds, they need to drink 30 ounces of water a day to stay hydrated.
To help you find the best dog water bottle, we compiled a reviews list that features the top 10, with the pros and cons of each one. At the end of the article is a buyer’s guide that offers suggestions of what features to look for to help you reach a decision.

The 10 Best Dog Water Bottles – Reviews 2020
1. Highwave AutoDogMug – Best Overall
The AutoDogMug is an easy-to-use dog water bottle that is perfect for traveling. It is a squeezable bottle with a bowl on the top for your dog to drink out of. To use, you fill up the bottle with water, then squeeze to fill up the bowl. When you let go, the rest of the water will flow back into the bottle. This means that you have to hold the bottle and keep it compressed while your dog drinks.
The bottle holds 20 ounces of water and is BPA free. We like that the bottle will fit into a standard drink holder in your vehicle and that it saves water because you don’t have to dump out the bowl when your dog has finished getting a drink.
You can choose from six different colors, and it comes with a removable strap that makes for easy carrying. It can be hand washed or put in the top rack of your dishwasher. On the downside, if your dog is a messy drinker, your hand and arm may become wet while you are holding the bottle. Nevertheless, it can provide your dog with a drink of water in a matter of seconds.
2. Anpetbest Dog Water Bottle – Best Value
The Anpetbest is the best dog water bottle for the money because it is simple to use and is offered at an affordable price. The bottle holds 11 ounces of water and comes with an attached bowl. To use, remove the bottle from the holder (which is also the bowl), and snap it into place so the spout is facing downward and the water can drain into the bowl. To fill the bowl, squeeze the bottle, and your pet will get a drink.
On the downside, the bottle is heavy, so the whole system won’t stand on its own. You have to support it while your dog drinks, which is why the Anpetbest isn’t the number-one bottle on our list. The bottle is dishwasher safe and BPA free, however, and there is a handle located on the holder that makes it easy to carry or attach to a backpack.
For a heavy-duty water bottle that is durable and can withstand wear and tear, the PupFlask is a great choice. If you travel frequently or enjoy outdoor adventures, this 24-ounce stainless-steel bottle can withstand constant abuse. It comes with an extra-wide drinking cup that snaps onto the side of the bottle when not in use, and there is a carrying handle.
To give your dog a drink, reverse the cup and open the quick-release button to fill it up. The leftover water can go back into the bottle. The flask is BPA and lead free, lightweight, and dishwasher safe. It is recommended to hand wash the cup, however, to prevent it from deforming from the high heat of the dishwasher.
On the downside, the silicone cup can be difficult to reverse and go back into place. This system is also pricier than the first two bottles, which is why it sits at number three on our list.
4. M&MKPET Dog Water Bottle
This affordable 12-ounce water bottle is ideal for small dogs, and it allows for one-handed operation so you can easily give your dog water when you are traveling. It is an affordable option that is made from quality materials: It is BPA and lead-free, as well as being FDA approved as food-grade material.
There is a silica gel ring seal that prevents water from leaking, so you can put it in a bag and not worry about getting everything else wet. The bottle has a cup attached to one end that will fill with water when you press the button, though there is a lock button that you have to disengage first. Once your dog has finished drinking, the leftover water can be returned back into the bottle.
The 12-ounce size is perfect for smaller dogs, but it is too little for larger dogs to drink easily from. This bottle is not dishwasher safe, but you can easily take it apart and hand wash it.
5. Upsky 007 Dog Water Bottle
This dog water bottle offers a few unique features: It holds water and dry food and comes with two collapsible bowls. It is an ideal product to use when traveling with your dog. The bottle is divided into two chambers: one holds 10 ounces of water, and the other holds 7 ounces of food. The collapsible silicone bowls each hold 12 ounces and are attached to the sides of the bottle by carabiner clips.
The bottle is free from BPA and is FDA approved for food-grade material. It is easy to fill with kibble because the water side has an isolating grid that prevents food from being poured into the water. The lid has a leak-proof silicone gasket, and the whole unit, including the bowls, is dishwasher safe on the top rack.
One negative aspect is that this is a bulky water bottle when the bowls are attached, and it doesn’t hold a large amount of water. It suits smaller breeds better in terms of how much water and food it can hold.
6. LumoLeaf Portable Pet Water Bottle
This water bottle made by LumoLeaf is an all-in-one design. It has a cup attached to the bottle that flips over when you need to offer your dog water. The bottle holds 20 ounces of water, and the bottle is free of BPA and phthalates. The cup is made from 100% food-safe silicone and twists off easily to clean. It can even be applied to other bottles of the same neck size.
The bottle is dishwasher safe, but the cup has to be hand-washed to prevent it from being destroyed by the heat. It comes with an aluminum carabiner that makes it convenient to attach to a bag. It is leak-proof, and to fill the cup with water, you squeeze the bottle. When you let go, it will suction the leftover water back into the bottle.
On the downside, it is difficult for larger dogs to drink from this design due to the small size of the cup, and some have reported trouble with the gasket not staying in place and causing the bottle to leak.
7. OllyDog Portable Water Bottle
If you want a bottle that is simple to use, then consider the OllyBottle. It holds 600ml of water, so it is a great option for larger breeds. The bottle sits in a holder that is detached when you are ready to give water to your dog. You fill up the holder/bowl, and then you can pour the remaining water back into the bottle if you want.
The bottle and holder are both BPA free and dishwasher safe. It is well made and durable, so it will last for many outdoor excursions. The lid has a handle for easy carrying, and the opening is large to make pouring easier. OllyDog is a company out of Boulder, Colorado, that is dedicated to making quality products.
On the downside, the cap can be tricky to screw back on, and you have to make sure it is closed correctly or it will leak. But it is an affordable option for a dog water bottle.
8. H2O4K9 Unit Insulated Dog Water Bottle
The H20K9 offers an insulated water bottle that is impact resistant so you don’t have to worry about it breaking if you accidentally drop it, and the water stays colder for longer periods of time. The outer shell also allows for an easier grip, especially if it happens to get wet.
Attached to the bottle is a removable drinking trough that you fill with water. The downside to this design is that you have to hold the trough while your dog drinks, since it won’t sit on its own. But the trough is large and holds a large amount of water at one time. Because the trough is also the lid, you don’t have to juggle a lid while trying to pour.
Once your dog has finished, it is simple enough to pour the remaining water back into the bottle. The K9 is BPA free and holds 25 ounces of water. The inner bottle is made from food-grade stainless steel, with a silicone outer shell. It has a loop on the top to help close the lid, but this doesn’t work well as a handle for carrying purposes.
9. Vivaglory Stainless Steel Dog Water Bottle
This stainless-steel water bottle is labeled as food-grade and BPA free, so you know you are providing a safe water vessel for your dog. It has a cap that also serves as a drinking bowl. You have to hold the trough while your pet drinks, however, or it will roll over and spill. It holds 25 ounces of water, which is a nice amount for traveling, and there is a carrying strap on the top of the bottle.
The trough/drinking bowl is deep but not as wide as others on our list, which makes it difficult for larger dogs to drink from. The lid has a sealing gasket to prevent leaks from occurring, and the bottle comes in a variety of colors. Another negative aspect of this design is that the bottle can be difficult to grip due to its shape and material.
On the upside, the company offers a 365-day guarantee against defects in materials and workmanship and the price is affordable.
10. Kurgo K01819 Dog Travel Water Bottle
The final dog water bottle on our reviews list is the Kurgo Gourd. It is made of PVC- and BPA-free plastic and is dishwasher safe. The bowl is attached to the bottom of the bottle and is small in size and difficult for medium to large dogs to drink from.
The bottle holds 24 ounces and the bowl holds 8 ounces of water. There is a carrying handle on the lid, but the opening to pour the water from is small, and it takes extra time to fill the bowl. Another issue is that the bowl can be difficult to separate from the bottom. The shape of the bottle is unique, so it won’t fit in a standard cup holder.
Each dog water bottle is different in design and how you use it. It’s important to find one that you enjoy using and most importantly, provides adequate hydration for your dog. In this buyer’s guide, we list the features that are ideal in a water bottle and considerations to keep in mind when making your purchasing decision.
You will find that many bottles are made from plastic, while some are stainless steel. Plastic is usually lower in cost and easier to clean because you can put them in the dishwasher. Stainless steel is more durable and can provide more insulative properties, so it will keep the water cooler. You have to be more careful about using stainless steel in your dishwasher, however; look for ones that specifically say dishwasher safe. When in doubt, wash the bottle by hand.
Many cups and troughs are made of silicone, which is easy to clean but may not be as durable in the long run. If you keep your dog from chewing on them, they should last for many years.
Larger dogs will require more water, so if you will be out for most of the day with no way to refill the bottle, you will need to get one large enough to provide the needed amount. Also take into consideration your activities, the season, and if you can refill it easily.
In our reviews list, you probably noticed that there are plenty of design options. The best design is the one that works well for you and is easy for your dog to drink from. Some bowls and troughs are smaller and more difficult for larger dogs to drink from, while other designs you have to hold while your dog drinks. Think about the personality of your dog and what they would prefer to use.
Of course, you want a bottle that won’t leak and is easy to carry or attach to a bag. Certain designs make it easy to save water, which is especially important if you need to conserve the water throughout the day.
Since you now know the importance of keeping your dog dehydrated, a good water bottle will make it easier to provide them much-needed water throughout the day. Our reviews list featured 10 of the best dog water bottles that are great for travel.
The best overall choice is the Highwave, which is easy to use yet fast and convenient, so it won’t take long to give your dog a drink. The Anpetbest is our choice for the best value because it is an affordable bottle with many great features that make it an ideal choice for traveling. If you don’t mind spending a little more money, the Tuff Pupper PupFlask is our premium choice, with its heavy-duty design and large drinking cup ideal for outdoor adventurers.
