In 2002, the American Kennel Club teamed with PetPartners, Inc., to bring the general public a new kind of pet insurance, one that would give dog and cat owners more variety within their insurance plans. They claim to be one of the first pet insurers in the United States. AKC’s mission is to “improve canine health and well-being of all dogs.”
One of the major selling points of this pet insurance is it’s “30-day certificate,” which gives you a free 30 days to try out the basic plan at no cost to you. The basic plan also covers behavioral therapy, something that is somewhat rare for pet insurance to cover without extra fees. The variety in plans that they give you is a plus, but the extra cost of these add-ons can really make it expensive.
AKC Pet Insurance accommodates all dogs, but it seems to appeal most to owners whose dogs have gotten out of the initial puppy stage. For someone looking for a truly custom pet insurance, AKC Pet Insurance is a great choice.
AKC Pet Insurance – A Quick Look
Basic or Custom Plans
With AKC Insurance, you can toggle what kind of coverage you want for each individual pet, or you can choose the “Basic” plan for a more affordable option. Basic coverage includes a $500 “incident limit,” which is the limit they will pay for injury or illness over a pet’s lifetime.
First 30 Days are Free
When you sign up for a brand-new account with AKC, your first 30 days of coverage are free. This coverage is their basic plan, which includes a $100 deductible, $500 incident limit, and 80% reimbursement rate. The waiting periods are shorter too: 1 day for accidents and 5 days for illnesses.
While selecting your insurance plan, you can choose to add one of several riders to your plan, like for exam coverage or one to cover end-of-life costs. Other insurance companies lump in these add-ons in their main policy, so it’s nice that AKC gives you some choices.
There is a mobile app called TailTrax you can use once you get a policy. With it, you can upload veterinary health records, store microchip information, and get access to your AKC registration information. There’s a useful 24/7 chat service on the app as well, where you can access a veterinarian at any time.

Where is AKC Pet Insurance Accepted?
Most pet insurance is a reimbursement service, including AKC Pet Insurance. Therefore, it’s possible to use AKC’s insurance at any specialized clinic or hospital, so long as the person giving care is a licensed veterinarian.
Are Vaccines Included?
Vaccines are not automatically included in the basic or custom plan. They are included in the Defender and DefenderPlus add-ons to the plans, but you need to pay extra monthly for that coverage. Defender and DefenderPlus also cover annual wellness exams, flea and tick prevention, and heartworm prevention.
How Does AKC Pet Insurance Compare to Figo?
Figo and AKC Pet Insurance are very similar in terms of price and coverage. However, AKC seems to offer a larger variety within plans. Figo automatically includes the wellness coverage, while AKC’s is optional. Additionally, AKC’s 2-day accident waiting period is slightly lower than Figo’s 3 days. Figo and AKC both insure pets in the US and Canada, while only Figo includes Puerto Rico coverage.

What the Users Say
Customers have praised AKC Pet Insurance for their kind and considerate customer service. When plans lapsed accidentally or tragedy struck the family, grace and thoughtfulness was extended to the families dealing with the insurance company. Extra time is taken to make sure your pet’s medical needs are covered.
Other people have disliked AKC Pet Insurance for denying claims that should have been covered. Another thing that has been complained about is how they have encouraged waiting for too long to see if a symptom could be harmful or not before filing a claim. People who enroll with their brand-new puppies seem least satisfied with this insurance, as the coverage period does not coincide with when illnesses or hereditary issues were discovered.
AKC Pet Insurance performs well for pet insurance. Most of the basics are covered in their bare-bones Basic plan, but if you want more coverage, you can simply add what you want. This is a great insurance for pets who are at normal health, and maybe don’t need the extra coverage. For pets who need a little more medical attention, the coverage can be there, but at a larger price.
The customer service is attentive, and for this and for plan flexibility, we gave it a 4.5/5 score.
After learning more about AKC Pet Insurance, we hope you have come closer to making a pet insurance buying decision.
